In this ongoing course, we will cover first grade phonics and practice reading/writing sentences using our newly learned phonics sounds and letters. You can choose to drop in one week at a time or attend ongoing. Each class will follow the same format, 2x a week: Topics Covered/Taught: -Distinguishing between long/short vowel words... example: cap, cape -Produce single syllable words by blending sounds -Identify the beginning, middle, and ending sound of a single syllable word -Identify and spell consonant diagraphs: (two consonant letters together stand for one sound - e.g. ch, sh, th, wh) Students understand that every syllable must contain a vowel. -Determine the number of syllables and break apart simple two-syllable words that have regular spelling patterns. -Read words that have inflectional endings (e.g. -s, -es, -ing, -ed). -Identify and read grade appropriate words that do not follow normal spelling patterns I will post printouts to help reinforce the learning in the lesson. I like to use a variety of tools in the classroom to engage students such as video clips, google slides, and readers. Hope to see you soon! -Teacher Meg

My Background:
I obtained a Bachelor of Science in 2012 from Barton College in North Carolina. I am a licensed teacher in the areas of Elementary Education K-5, Middle Grades Mathematics 6-9, and Special Education K-12. I also hold a TESOL (Teaching English to speakers of other languages) certificate. I have 7 years of public school teaching experience. Currently, I am a Work-At-Home mom of two kids. I have been teaching online for the past 3 years, so I understand the importance of making students feel welcome and included in this setting.
My Philosophy:
I believe all children are capable of being successful, regardless of their backgrounds. I believe that every child has different strengths and can use their strengths to overcome their weaker areas. I also think that the more fun a child has, the more they will want to learn.
