Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
Welcome to "From Stardust to Dinosaurs to Today: The Geologic Time Scale"! In this class, we will examine the history of our planet and life on Earth in a scientific capacity. Beginning with the formation of the Earth about 4.6 billion years ago, we will learn about what early Earth may have been like, when life first began, and how plants and animals evolved to create the modern species that exist today. All of this fascinating information will be presented within the lens of the Geologic Time Scale; students will learn about the four main Eras (Precambrian, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic), and the ten main Periods within these Eras.

The information in this class will be learned through a combination of lecture-style slides and class discussions, along with a short video clip. New information, vocabulary, and photos will be presented in slides, and as a class we will answer questions and have discussions together! All students are provided a handout to document their learning throughout the class by answering the questions. They will also be provided with web access to the slides -- no need to worry about writing down all the new information! No prior knowledge is needed.

This is the "trial class" of the Let's Explore Earth series, a group of lessons designed to introduce students to various areas of study in the field of Geosciences. Please feel tree to take this class before enrolling in the 7-week course.

(Please note that all theories and information contained in this lesson are the widely-accepted theories in the current scientific community).
Learning Goals
Students will learn about the main Eras and Periods of the Geologic Time Scale, including their names and approximate times in history. Students will understand how the Earth was likely formed, and the process of how different life forms evolved throughout time. They will gain an understanding of the chronological timeline of Earth's past, and understand that humans evolved only very recently. Students will also use their new knowledge to make predictions about what Earth may look like in the far future.

Hello everyone! My name is Annette and I'm a teacher originally from Toronto, Canada, but currently located in Nicaragua.

I have both passion AND experience teaching a wide variety of science topics. I developed an intense interest in geological and biological sciences from a very young age, and earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours Biology) and a Bachelor of Education, both from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I have two years' in-school experience teaching Geography, Biology, and General Science for grades 7-13 in Canada and England, and three years of experience teaching English as a Foreign Language online. However, I've been working with children in a variety of other settings for over 13 years! Here on Outschool, I offer a range of science classes and courses for approximately 10-16 year olds. I am also queer and I'm VERY passionate about providing a safe, inclusive, and welcoming class environment for all of my students. My classroom is a place for all who need a safe space to learn.
