Creative writers are often drawn to the stories of animals. For many people, animals and pets give them their first experience with unconditional love, with unbearable cuteness, with care taking and responsibility, and, sadly, with loss and death. I think that's why so many writers end up writing stories, poems, and essays about the importance of animals in our lives. Students will create a list of books they can read about animals and also leave the class with an idea for their own story, essay, or poem about an animal they love.
I am an English professor and a creative writer, and I love animals. That's my dog Scout in the class picture! I have written essays about dogs, cats, and chickens, and I help my creative writing students figure out how to make sure their animal stories are interesting to other people.

We will not be discussing sensitive content, but parents should review the book list we come up with in order to determine if the titles are appropriate for their individual child. Some children may choose to talk about pets who have died, which can be upsetting for sensitive children.
