Soaring atop the Himalayan Mountains in central Asia, Mount Everest has traditionally been thought of as the Tallest Mountain on Earth. While this is certainly true from a certain point of view, in our class we will discover that the method by which we measure a mountain can yield stunningly different results! Together we will learn about mountain formation, measurement techniques and explore how the location of a mountain, whether deep under the ocean, high in the Artic or along the equator can each give us a different answer for what should truly be considered the Tallest Mountain in the World! Our class will cover several interrelated topics: - Mountain Formation *Tectonic *Volcanic *Block Mountains *Mesas - Measurement Methods *Elevation *Prominence *Base to Peak - The Contenders! *Mount Everest, Nepal *Denali, Alaska *Mauna Kea, Hawai'i *Chimborazo, Ecuador - Bonus Round *Olympus Mons, Mars ;) We will use a slide presentation with some audio/visual aids as we learn together. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts, ideas and will be challenged to think critically about the information being presented and come up with their own solutions!
學習目標
Discover how the method by which we make measurements can be biased.
