Designed for all writing levels, students are simply asked to write their best and adhere to the general guidelines and forms of the daily writing exercise. Classes are designed to improve and enhance creativity, writing fluency, style, and mastery of language rather than focus on grammar, spelling, or other traditional writing conventions. I have been a high school English teacher and speech and debate coach for almost 20 years, working both in the United States and in China. In addition, I have a background in writing and in theater arts. These types of writing workshops have always been a key part of weekly class lessons and have made a tremendous impact in my students' writing.
Students should have a dedicated writing journal. I encourage this to be a traditional book/paper journal of their choice, decorated if they wish, and containing nothing but their writing. It should be something that they are comfortable with. Students may write in pen, pencil, markers, crayons, etc. While I do encourage a traditional writing journal, I understand that some students are more comfortable typing, so I will reluctantly allow them to type if they prefer to do so.
