This is the fourth part of a four part series on the History of the United States. You can take all four courses, or each separately. I have taught US History at Tallahassee Community College for the past 15 years. I hold a Master's degree in History from Florida State University as well as a Juris Doctorate from the University of Florida , and I practiced law for 38 years before retiring in 2017. I have taught a senior/graduate level history course at the Florida State University on the "Historian as Lawyer." I have also made presentations at historical conferences and contributions to a Historical Dictionary of Stuart England 1603-1689. I have served as a judge for ten years at the annual statewide Florida History Fair.
The final part of this course in American history focuses on current events, so there is a tendency to let biases and political leanings cloud what is presented. I will do my best to avoid that. The longer I have studied America's story the more impressed I have become that there are men and women of good will on both sides of the political spectrum, who are sincerely trying to make America a better place for the common man. It is in that spirit that I will try to give a balanced presentation of the events of the last 60 or so years. With that understanding and approach, we will discuss the persistent racism in America since the Civil war, America's many efforts to combat it, and the growing recognition of specific women's rights as part of American society. If the students were a bit older I would discuss abortion and birth control, but I will probably gloss over that area of our story for the middle school student.
