William Shakespeare has been dead over 400 years, but he lives on in his work—his plays are still performed and adapted, while his sonnets are still studied and loved. To love or like (or at least not fear) Shakespeare.
This is the first play I ever read, way back in 1968 (before I was even born!) My romp in the unnamed forest triggered a lifelong love of Shakespeare that was nurtured by my mother and encouraged by my own odd nature. Over the years, teaching Shakespeare's works has only deepened my passion for and understanding of these plays. Or, as a recent student explained to me, I am a Bardolator.
It is not necessary to buy (or even download) anything, but a notebook is a good idea. We will be reading the Folger Shakespeare Library text in class. However, there are many formats available for free download. This is the one we will be working from in class: https://shakespeare.folger.edu/shakespeares-works/a-midsummer-nights-dream/download/ If your student is a really avid Shakespeare lover, I recommend the Folger Shakespeare Library text. It costs around $7 new, but is loaded with helpful footnotes. Again, this purchase is not required.
