We'll be enjoying reading and discussing novels that feature rebellious characters in this book club for teens! The class is comprised of teacher presentation and learner participation. Learners read the featured novel of the week in advance of each class meeting. Class begins with a plot summary, and following this plot summary review, I pose guiding questions to initiate a discussion of the novel and to analyze the author's use of literary elements including: characterization, setting,...
On the course in general: The books in this course touch on sensitive topics at times. Most are about adolescent characters who are navigating the difficulties of growing up against social odds. To that end, I have over 25 years of experience teaching adolescents texts such as these in in-person and online classroom settings. In my classes I create a safe place to discuss sensitive topics and begin every class with my stated "guidelines" that include "participate politely" and "respond respectfully" and offer examples of what this looks like. I am committed to equality and social justice and to engaging teens in conversations that help them to see the complexities of "coming of age".
