Students will need a copy of each book (or an audiobook) and access to the movie. Students can read the book on their own, listen to an audiobook, or parents can read the book to their child. 

Parents should consider that The Hunger Games is a story about a reality show where 24 teens must kill one another until only one survives. There are several gory moments in addition to teens dying by spears, rocks, arrows, knives, fire, poisoning, and more. One boy's face is horribly mauled by animals. There are stories about the cruelty of life faced by the citizens who live outside of the Capitol. Other than the cruelty and violence, parents should also be aware that one character is an alcoholic who drinks constantly.

Our discussion will focus on the themes of compassion, humanity, bravery, and hope. We will look at the characters who maintain their humanity and fight against the oppression of those in power.
