In this introductory class, you will learn the basics of how to construct a short story from start to finish. You will learn how to open your stories with a ‘hook’ that entices the reader into wanting to read on; learn how to set the scene; learn how how to bring characters to life; and, learn how to create dialogue that both shows the story and also helps to move it along. Students will improve their understanding of how to structure and write short stories using the six traits of writing: ideas, organisation, voice, sentence fluency, word choice and conventions.
Aside from teaching, I am a published author, book editor and proofreader. I have also written texts and short stories that are used in SAT revision papers for schools throughout the UK.
Required: pen/pencil and plenty of paper for note-taking.
