課堂經歷
Pirates have held our fascination for many years, whether playing the part of the villains, as in Peter Pan or the misunderstood heroes, as in Pirates of the Caribbean. In this one time class, we take a look at what exactly makes a reader say 'A pirate's life for me!' We will take a brief look at well known real pirates, such as Blackbeard and Calico Jack and see that women also ruled the seven seas with a look at Ann Bonny and Mary Read- and find out how they helped shape our fascination...
Students will learn how to make a story plan using the different elements of a short story. Students will learn basic facts about real-life pirates and their role in shaping legends and stories of pirates and will discover how to use those elements in their own story writing. Students will also learn about stereotypical pirates, language associated with them and characterisation.
Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, I've almost 20 years’ experience in teaching English in primary schools (4-11-year-olds). Over those years I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills. My favourite lessons have always been when I can find out what interests and motivates a student and use those interests to engage a learner and build their confidence. I have been involved with many 'PIrate Days' in school and have run pirate-themed events within my youth groups, some alongside a good friend and 'professional pirate' (who has travelled the world to make appearances and run events as a pirate!).
Something to write on, such as a notebook or sheets of paper (please bring enough to make notes, create a plan and the story itself). Something to write with. OR A device to work on. Please ensure that students on devices can still be present in the classroom whilst working on their writing.
學習者無需使用標準 Outschool 工具以外的任何應用程式或網站。
No inappropriate content during class. Mention will be made of practices such as walking the plank and historical facts such as receiving the death sentence for piracy.
A variety of online and published works have been referred to over years of teaching this subject, including but not limited to: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson Meet the Pirates by James Davies Pirates Horrible Histories by Terry Deary Piratepedia by Niehaus Alisha https://www.rmg.co.uk/discover/teacher-resources/stories-from-the-sea/pirates https://www.history.co.uk/shows/black-sails/articles/pirates-fact-vs-fiction and my good friend, professional Pirate, Chris Moor https://www.facebook.com/ChrisMoorAsCaptainJackSparrow/ None of these sources will be directly included in class, nor material used directly from them but they have been helpful in research over the last few years.
Hello and thank you for stopping by to find out a little more about me. I hail from the UK and live in Kent (the bottom right-hand corner as you look at the map!) I graduated from the University of Exeter with a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree...
