Let's simplify the Sistine Chapel- whether you are planning a trip to Rome, have been and want to learn more, or are just curious about the art. This class will help simplify a massive building into simple parts highlighting the most see murals and giving fun facts you can share with your friends and family. Through lecture and discussion our goal is to understand fresco painting and the collaborative efforts that made the Sistine Chapel one of the most famous places in the world. This...
Students will learn- Who built the chapel? Why/ Who commissioned the artists/ What artists contributed? The method of painting? How did they gain a cohesive style with so many artists contributing?
I have studied art history for the last ten years. I love the Sistine Chapel but found it overwhelming. There are so many scenes you can't make out the details of, even the best religious scholar may struggle with some scenes. I hope to help break down the stories so when students have the opportunity to visit they can feel less overwhelmed and maybe have some confidence in remembering what they see. So many focus on on the Last Judgement or Creation of Adam they forget what else decorates the space.

This course contains images of torture, nudity, and death. This course focuses on art history and art contributions from some of our most famous renaissance names. Religious images would have been understood or used to explain stories to the public. I do not expect students to have any biblical knowledge and I myself am an art historian focusing on the techniques and fun aspects of these paintings. I will do my best to answer any and all questions but we are focusing on the art.
