This class is premised on the idea that the Bible is not divinely written but instead written by humans. We'll be looking at the stories from the New Testament as reflecting issues and concerns that arose during the ancient times. We'll look at their literary structure and discuss literary techniques as well as talk about the theological issues that they bring up. I was raised within the United Church of Canada to view the Bible as a historical and literary document. I attended a year of theological studies at McGill University, in Montreal, Quebec. I'm currently agnostic or even atheist, but fascinated by Biblical history.
Students will be required to have a copy of the Bible on hand during class and for homework. Hard-copies are recommended, but online versions do as well. I recommend a NRSV of the Bible but others will do.
We will be discussing theories regarding Jesus' conception and birth, and I am presuming students know the standard modern meaning of the word virgin. In discussion about Paul we may talk about what he wrote regarding male-on-male sexual abuse and how those lines have been misused to condemn homosexuality. I will try to keep all conversation as polite and non-explicit as possible.
