This flex course has been developed off of high demand for my face to face an ongoing class with the same name.  This class is designed for an up and coming, or just graduated, or current second-grader,  who is looking for some extra support in math.  Each week we will look at a math topic covered in second-grade and learn different strategies to answer questions on this topic.  This course will cover some common core strategies, math talks, and reasoning with math.   

Each Week Students Will:
Receive 2 interactive video lessons.  These lessons will encourage students to pause the video and complete different tasks.  They will then check their work.   Video lessons will include videos, songs, and games.  

Students will also participate in 2 discussion board posts each week.  Where they will be asked to complete a math problem and explain their thinking on their answer.  Students will be encouraged to use a video upload for this part of the course. 

Students will be asked to comment on someone else's post at least once a week to engage with other learners.   Learning from our peers is one of the best ways for students to build an understanding. 

For the flex schedule, I have added a 9th-week task where students will use all of their new or reviewed knowledge together to solve a larger problem.  This project will include elements of all of the prior weeks to complete.

The flex version of this class will get the same materials as the live version, as well as the same teaching.  You will also get a bonus week of instruction the Problem-Based Learning task to complete.

Hello!  

My name is Jamie Nelsen, I am currently a reading coach and interventionist at an International School.  I have taught students from pre-k (age 4) to 5th grade full time in the classroom, as a homeroom teacher.   I am my 9th year of full time teaching, and I have also worked as a substitute teacher in Orlando Florida for 2 years.  The past 9 years I have been working in international schools around the world, I have experience with both the Common Core and the British National Curriculum.  

I love traveling the world and teaching internationally allows me to do this.  I work with students to develop their independence and ability to learn skills by thinking through problems instead of asking for help.  I believe that every child needs to be given the skills that they need to be successful, which include learning how to learn so that they can discover their own interests and learn more about it in a powerful, meaningful way, that will encourage lifelong learning! 

I recently finished my Master's degree in Educational Technology and I am passionate about technology integration into learning!
