"Stanley Yelnats is under a curse. A curse that began with his no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather and has since followed generations of Yelnats. Now Stanley has been unjustly sent to a boys’ detention center, Camp Green Lake, where the boys build character by spending all day, every day digging holes exactly five feet wide and five feet deep. There is no lake at Camp Green Lake. But there are an awful lot of holes." Goodreads

Welcome to book club camp! 

Class will begin with a warm-up question to get all students engaged and ready to participate. The teacher will then guide students through a series of multiple-choice and critical thinking questions based on the reading schedule. By utilizing a finger-voting system, all students can answer multiple-choice questions at the same time. For critical thinking questions, students will raise their hands and take turns sharing their thoughts. Throughout the class, students will get a "brain break" as we return to the lesson puzzle and students guess the secret puzzle (students love this feature)! The class will end with the teacher reminding them what to read before coming to the next class. 

This book contains these themes (which we will be discussing):
📚The benefits of true friendship
📚The nature and destruction of cruelty
📚The importance of history
📚 Luck vs. fate vs. coincidence vs. choice

Here is the book club camp schedule: 
🕳 Day 1:
Discussion of chapters 1-14
Homework: read chapters 15-28 (finish part 1)

🕳 Day 2:
Discussion of chapters 15-28
Homework: read chapters 29-39

🕳 Day 3:
Discussion of chapters 29-39
Homework: read chapters 40-49 (finish part 2)

🕳 Day 4:
Discussion of chapters 40-49
Homework: read part three and watch the 2003 film "Holes"

🕳 Day 5:
Discussion of part 3 and the 2003 film

This book contains some violence (nothing gruesome or too scary). Any violence in the story will be approached with empathy by not focusing on the violence itself, but rather on motivations and deeper context.

Please obtain a copy of the book "Holes" by Louis Sachar BEFORE we meet for our first class. This book is available at most libraries and for purchase online in hardcopy or ebook. Students do not need to read the entire book before our first meeting, but please have them read chapters 1-14 before our first class.
