Students will be provided with a list of the phonics and words for the week with suggestions of spelling activities to do at home. Some weeks students will also be provided with an additional text to read during the week.

Assessment is formative and occurs throughout the lesson. If I feel your learner has a confident grasp of all the concepts taught during this Level One course, I will recommend they move up to Level Two.

This ongoing class for struggling readers, especially those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ASD, and ADHD, uses a blend of successful literacy building strategies to strengthen reading, writing, and spelling skills. The class uses a range of fiction and non-fiction text types with topics and themes that interest learners in the 9-12 age bracket.

The semi-private teaching set up not only makes this class more affordable for more families, but also allows students to develop confidence reading in front of their peers. Multi-sensory Orton Gillingham based approaches engage learners, especially those with ADHD, and help students to develop new valuable neural pathways connected to literacy. Each lesson students will engage in activities to build recognition of phonics sounds, spelling, vocabulary, reading, comprehension, and writing. Students will engage in a range of reading activities including mirror reading and jump in reading to improve their fluency, confidence, and expression.

Ms. Allie is a fully qualified and experienced teacher of English, Literacy, and English as a Second Language. She has been teaching for 15 years. She has considerable experience with neurodiverse students and those with SLD’s in reading and writing (Dyslexia). The teaching style of this class combines elements of several research and evidence based approaches to the teaching of literacy. 

Recommended Materials:
It is highly recommended that students have a mini white board and some white board markers. A piece of paper and a pen will do until a whiteboard can be sourced.

Class requirements:
This class works best for students whose reading level is equivalent to that of a first year primary/elementary school child, and who have a basic understanding of phonics, including the sounds: f, ff, l, ll, m, n, nn, r, s, ss, v, ve, z, zz, sh, th, ng, nk, b, bb, c, k, ck, d, g, gg, h, j, g, p, qu, t, tt, t, wh, x, y, ch, tch, a, e, i, o, u, ay, ee, igh, ow, air, ir, 

If your learner is not confident with these phonics sounds (makes more than 5 errors when reading them aloud) I recommend they start with my Foundation (blue)  literacy building course.


Progress:
This class runs on an ongoing basis with the content repeating every 20 weeks. Learners may join anytime.
Once your learner has mastered the content in this course I recommend them to move onto my level 2 course. If this content is a bit challenging for your learner, I also run a beginner level course.

Content:
1. Week of May 15:  'The Shops' exploring the "zz", "ll", and "gg" sounds. 
2. Week of May 22:  'The Shops' exploring the "ss", "tch", and "ng" sounds. 
3. Week of May 29:  'The Cave' exploring the sounds "wr", "nk", and "th".
4. Week of June 5:  'The Cave' exploring multi-syllabic words and suffixes. 
5. Week of June 12: 'Fed Up' exploring the sounds "nk", "sh", "ch" and suffixes.
6. Week of June 19: 'Fed Up' exploring common difficult words including; to, the, was, I, my, go.
7. Week of June 26: 'Camping' exploring exploring common difficult words including; to, all, of, ball, wash, for.
8. Week of July 3: 'Camping' exploring multi-syllabic words and suffixes.
9. Week of July 10: 'Hunting' exploring challenging words including; for, dusty, bushes, food.
10: Week of July 17: 'Hunting' exploring multi-syllabic words and suffixes.

學習目標

Students will improve the fluency of a range of increasingly complex phonics sounds and increasingly complex spelling words. 
Student will develop an understanding of root words and suffixes.
Students will improve their reading accuracy, expression, pace, and confidence.
Students will improve their writing by practicing sentences connected to the focus text.

Ms. Allie holds a Bachelor of Arts (English, Linguistics) and a Bachelor of Education (Middle/Secondary) from Australian universities. She has 15 years experience teaching English and Literacy to children all over the English speaking world. She also has significant experience working with students who have Dyslexia, ADHD, and ASD. She herself has ADHD and is Autistic.
