In this 12-week book club, learners will read Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. Each week, learners will be responsible for reading 2 chapters of the book, then we will discuss those chapters every week. In week 1, we will discuss the mythological world of Ancient Greece that the world of Percy Jackson is built around. Learners will learn about the main gods and goddesses and their role in Greek Mythology before diving into the book during week 2 of class. Each week that we...
Learners will spend time reading Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. In this class, we will make sure that reading comprehension is a priority and that all learners get an opportunity to discuss the reading material. We will also connect the text to the stories from Ancient Greek Mythology that the book are based on.
I am a trained educator for K-8th grade students, I have been in many classrooms teaching many different subjects to these age groups, so I am well practiced in presenting information in an appropriate way so that it isn't too intense for learners.

We will discuss the idea of Greek gods and goddesses in a mythical, fictional sense. There will be mention of babies, marriage, and infidelity (explained to students as unfaithfulness to a married partner by having other girlfriends or boyfriends). We will talk about war, killing, and battles, but we will not go into bloody details. Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief does have violent scenes depicted in the pages of the book. It is a book recommended for the age group selected for class, but I would recommend reading the book with your learner or doing some research on the book to see whether it is acceptable to you for your learner to be in this class. If you have any questions, please contact me.
Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief will be read in class. Please make sure your learner has their own copy of the book to read at home.
