Proficient adult readers all use the same skills. In this study, we will focus on the skills of asking questions to yourself as you read, making connections to other things you have read, seen, and experienced, making predictions, and using sensory skills to imagine the book, much like making a movie in your head. These skills will be modeled, practiced together, and then used throughout the rest of the reading. Students will learn and practice sharing these observations and questions, practice marking them with sticky notes as they read, and practice encouraging and polite response to others' sharings. Depending on the group, there may be writing or creating some of the inventions the boy in the book does.

The main character is an adolescent boy who leaves home to live in the woods, with his parents' permission (they don't take him seriously.) He does live on his own in the woods for a year. There is no indication that he is leaving for any other reason than that he wants to leave their crowded apartment and live in the wilderness.
