John Steinbeck's classic novel is a seminal text of American literature and is studied in schools across the world. In this club we will explore and discuss the novel, characters, setting, context and Steinbeck's superb use of language. Each lesson will focus on a chapter and will allow for in depth questioning and teacher led discussion. Learners will be able to interact with each other and comment on their thoughts and ideas. I will also be able to respond to any learners questions...
Lesson 1: Chapter 1 : Introduction to the novel's main characters George and Lennie. A discussion on Steinbeck's use of nature and animal imagery. Lesson 2: Chapter 2: A discussion and analyse of this chapter, looking at Candy and Curley amongst others. Lesson 3: Chapter 3: We explore the character of Curley's wife, discussing sexism in the context of the novel. Lesson 4: Chapter 4: We will explore the theme of racism in the novel and discuss the character of Crooks Lesson 5: Chapters 5 and 6: An analysis of Slim and a discussion of the end of the novel.
I am a qualified English teacher and have been teaching in Secondary High Schools for 18 years, including several years online. I have vast experience teaching this novel and in helping and preparing students for exams.
