This class provides learners the opportunity to gain insight into day to day life in Costa Rica including its culture, social and political development. We compare and contrast Costa Rica with its neighbors including Nicaragua. Students will gain an appreciation of how a small developing country succeeded in becoming a model for sustainable development while maintaining high health and education standards.

I was Director of Communications at the UK Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica between 2004 and 2013. In this position I did political reporting for the British Foreign Office ( FCO) on both Costa Rica and Nicaragua. I  organized numerous development programs in both countries and received a variety of awards for my work including a UK Foreign Secretary award for innovation, an award from the Costa Rica Tourist Police and an award from the BICU university in Bluefields, Nicaragua.

I founded the Costa Rica ice hockey program in 1996 and managed the program until 2018.
