In this 1:1 tutoring class, the student will learn how to take effective notes, with a focus on writing down the right material, how the material is written on the page, using graphic organizers to take notes on the fly and ensuring that the note-taking is effective overall.

I will teach by analyzing the student's current note-taking habits, identifying weaknesses, and building those up. I'll build your student up with graphic organizers, identifying appropriate material to write down and practice, practice, practice. Finally, I'll build confidence in your student with encouragement, challenges, and finding errors I'll leave periodically. ;-)

My teaching style is very laid back. I believe that people learn best when they are confortable. If I still had a classroom, I would use alternative seating to allow for differences in comfort. I use the Socratic method often, leading students to conclusions by presenting them with information and having discourse until a natural conclusion has been reached. We then test that conclusion and evaluate it.

Learners will interact with me constantly during these sessions. Additionally, I am available to my learners by phone, text, or email or a quick virtual call in between lessons for homework emergencies.

Learners do not need any prior knowledge.

I am a degreed educator with decades of professional experience working with children of all ages. I started babysitting in 1996. In high school, I volunteered with the Children’s Hospital of the King's Daughters for two summers in high school and taught pre-k Sunday School (paid) on the weekends. During the school year, I volunteered at church with children’s ministries (choir, acolytes, special events, youth club for ages 8-12, and youth group for ages 13-17).

While working on my degree in college at James Madison University (class of 2008), I had teaching practica (hands-on experience) in Early Childhood Education (ages 0-5), Elementary (ages 5-12), Middle (ages 11-14), High School (ages 14-18), a local (public) GED program in Dayton, VA (ages 18+) and at the collegiate level with student-athletes at JMU (ages 18-22). Due to the way my degree was structured, these practica were required, though I sought out placements across the age span 0-18+ because I couldn’t decide which age group I most enjoyed working with. I also had a 25-hour practica (ages 5-18) with The JMU Speech-Language Clinic for my degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

During my summer and winter breaks, I was a substitute teacher for Virginia Beach Public Schools as well as a preschool teacher in private preschool programs for ages 2-4 (FT, PT, and substitute). I spent the summer of 2007 with the Autism Society of North Carolina at their overnight summer camp in Pittsboro, NC as a (paid) camp counselor; campers ranged in age from 4-65 that year. I have taught Special Education Elementary Resource (SLD) in Virginia and Elementary Inclusion (rare disabilities) in Arizona.

I’ve been a professional tutor since 2013. I enjoy tutoring the most as many of the benefits are the same as teaching, but with less stress and more flexible hours. I am a member of the National Tutoring Association and the Association for Educational Communication and Technology. I’ve volunteered with the Vail School District in Vail, AZ as a Reading Mentor and currently offer free tutoring via email in my local community for any student who is struggling with school for any reason. I am currently working on my Master's of Education with a concentration in Learning, Technology, and Leadership Education and plan to graduate in mid-2024.

When I'm not working, I enjoy making quilts, working in my garden (flowers and vegetable), and spending time with my family. I have two dogs and three cats; you're not likely to see my dogs, but my cats, Mo, and Whiskers, love to help check on my classes (you might see them from time to time), and my 6-year-old daughter loves to "assist" while I am teaching phonics, reading, and social clubs.
