In this class, young writers will learn that writing is a way to communicate meaning. The children will work productively during class and generate topics, plan writing, and record their thoughts on paper. The goal is to teach the writing process by first drawing a picture and then moving on from drawing to phonetics to sounding out words. Students are motivated because they can choose a topic that is important to them. We will share our writings with our classmates!

Week 1Lesson 1Writers have stories to tellWriters write stories to tell other people about them. We will brainstorm our stories on a heart map.Week 2Lesson 2Writers make a movie in their mindsWe will make a movie by closing our eyes and remembering events.Week 3Lesson 3Writers draw pictures to match our stories.We will model our stories on paper and make sure it matches our thoughts.Week 4Lesson 4Writers add details to our picturesWe will make sure there are people, places, and things in our pictures.Week 5Lesson 5Writers tell our stories across fingersWe will make sure our stories have a beginning, middle, and end.Week 6Lesson 6Writers think about what they can do when they are done.We will go back and make sure our stories make sense.Week 7Lesson 7Writers match the labels to their picturesI will model what labeling is and have them try to get beginning sounds in their pictures.Week 8Lesson 8Writers revise their pictures and editWe will use a checklist and fix up our writing.
1. Students will generate their own topics. 2. Students will be thoughtful about their own topics. 3. Students will plan their stories across pages. 4. Students will add more details to their stories. 5. Students will label their pictures using letter-sound correspondence. 6. Students make a transition from mini-lesson to writing.
This class is taught by a kindergarten teacher with over 20 years experience teaching Writer’s Workshop. I have received training and completed TCRWP in writing study. I have taught ESL students virtually.
