課堂經歷
If you have a child who is excited to learn American Sign language, you are in the right place. American Sign Language is a living, visual language used by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. It is recognized as a "foreign language" in the United States and satisfies the requirements for a foreign language in grades 7-12. In this 8 week course, we will build new vocabulary each week and learn how to use it conversationally. Fingerspelling is an integral part of American Sign Language. Therefore, it is recommended that students first take my one time classes that cover the alphabet and numbers 1-100. Fingerspelling will give them a good foundation for learning the language and make it easier to understand conversational sign language. This will be an interactive class where I will be working with each student to ensure they are making the signs correctly. It will be imperative that cameras remain on for the duration of the class so that I know if everyone is understanding the new material and ready to continue on. Students will be interacting with me and with each other as we practice our conversational phrases and vocabulary. My teaching style is to help my students enjoy learning something new. I use a variety of games and music to help students remember the new vocabulary each week and it makes learning so much more fun. This beautiful language is more than just vocabulary. It is an entire method of communication. So, we will learn how to use our vocabulary in a conversational way. For example, we may learn the vocabulary words PLAY and BALL and WANT, then learn how to interpret the sentence "Do you want to play ball?" into ASL. Our topics will include: -Greetings, names and name signs -Activities -Food -Family and Friends -Emotions -Colors -Calendar -Animals Vocabulary lists, games and music resources will be provided.
學習目標
Students will have a firm grasp of a large base of vocabulary words and be able to use them to communicate in ASL. This will provide a nice foundation for any student who wishes to continue learning the language.

Hello! My name is Sarah Bush and I love to teach American Sign Language. I have been studying and teaching ASL for over 17 years. I attended Union County College Deaf Interpreter Program in New Jersey (#1 in the state) and got 75% of the way through before life interrupted. So I started a company called Chatty Hands where I taught children, parents, teachers and therapists how to use ASL as a bridge to communication. I developed my own curriculum modifying it according to the group I was teaching. I have been teaching ASL to children as young as 6 months all the way up to adults. It is such a great feeling to watch a 6 month old baby understand and use a sign to communicate. It is also so rewarding to share this beautiful language with children of all ages and abilities. In my classes, we use many different tools to learn how to sign....books, music, games....its called a multi-sensory approach to learning. But that's part of what makes it so much fun to learn. In my experience, when kids are having fun while learning, they will retain that information much longer. Sign Language is a wonderful language to use for all sorts of reasons from communicating with Deaf or Hard of Hearing people to bridging the gap of communication during a speech delay in a child. I hope you will join me in a class and at least learn the universal sign for "I love you" to share with all of your loved ones. ** I teach both group classes and private lessons.
