This class will introduce or review the steps of the scientific method using candy canes! We will compare mixtures and solutions and identify the signs of a chemical reaction. The class will open with students sharing their favorite holiday foods or candies with one another. Then, we will place the steps of the scientific method in order, define them, and discuss how the process can be viewed as a cycle. Next, we will set up our two experiments! Handout (to be posted in classroom) Red crayon, marker, or colored pencil 3 cups (clear is best, but any three cups will do!) Baking sheet, bin, or craft tray Package of mini or full-sized candy canes (at least 6 candy canes) Warm & cold water About 1.5 cups of white vinegar About 1/2 cup baking soda Medicine dropper or pipette (optional) Spoon
