Students will need to introduce themselves before the start of our class, and participate in discussion each week. There will be a discussion question posted in the chat box that should be completed before the class content. These are designed to get the students thinking about the topic. Students can either respond by typing or sending a video. There will be two lessons to complete a week. Each lesson is designed to take 20-30 minutes to complete, and students should be spending no more than 20-30 minutes per week on discussion in the classroom. There will be links provided to online resources that the children will visit such as websites, games, and videos. They will use these resources along with pre-recorded lectures to complete the course content. Throughout the course I will be using big words for the brain such as cerebellum and cranial nerves with an explanation of what they mean. Keep scrolling for information on teacher discounts! Week 1: What is the brain? We will explore images of the brain, learn what the brain is made of, where it is located, what it looks like, and what its purpose is. Week 2. The parts of the brain. We will explore a diagram of the main parts of the brain, where they are located, and what they do. We will be introduced to the names of different parts of the brain and we will develop our own nicknames to remember them. Week 3. Plasticity and growth mindset! We will learn what brain plasticity is in order to develop a growth mindset. We will have a discussion about how the students have overcome their own challenges and how that could be related to brain plasticity. Week 4. Developing your brain. We will be introduced to and discuss techniques and exercises that can help develop different areas of the brain. We will discuss why we think different behaviors, like exercise and socialization are important to the development of our brain. Week 5. What is psychology We will learn what psychology is and how it is studied. Week 6. The limbic system We will learn about the limbic system, its structures and role. Week 7. Learning We will learn how the brain learns. Week 8. Memories We will learn about how the brain stores memories. Week 9. Personality We will learn what makes us who we are. Week 10. Motivation We will learn how our brain works to motivate us. Week 11. Social Psychology We will learn about how we react and socialize, and how behaviors of others contribute to our own. Week 12. Wellness We will learn how stress impacts our brains, and how to cope and promote well-being. Week 13. Brain Development We will learn how our brain is developing through childhood. Week 14. Consciousness We will learn how the conscious brain works (thoughts that we are aware of). Week 15. Subconsciousness We will learn about the parts of our brain that function even when we are asleep, and thoughts we might be having that we are not aware of. Week 16. Intelligence We will learn what intelligence is, how it is tested, and our expanding understanding of different types of intelligence. This course introduces children to psychology topics. Children will learn about memory, development, social emotional development, attention, behavior, neuropsychology, understanding research, MRI, neural circuits, and cognition (among many other topics). When I took my first psychology course in University I was hooked on the topic! I couldn't believe it had taken me so long to learn about my brain! The program I was in would not allow for a minor, but that did not stop me from taking every psychology course I could fit in my schedule! The more I studied psychology the stronger the feeling grew that it was a topic that should be learned early in life. If I could improve my own mind and memory so much as a late teen/ young adult, imagine how much impact a psychology course could have on a child's learning? Imagine how much it could change the life of someone who is neurodivergent if they could understand brain plasticity and adaptability? Psychology is a passion for me, that is why I am offering this course, and that is why I hope you will sign up!
