>>>PLEASE READ BEFORE ENROLLING: The live portion of this class consists of hour-long, lecture-based presentations, with Q&A breaks as time permits -- you know your learner(s) best, so please consider if the session length and format is a good fit for them.*** Zebras and Giraffes are both endemic to Africa -- but both can be found in art all around the world! Some older art also serves as records of the historical practice of "animal diplomacy" between kingdoms and empires, while more modern art often draws upon the natural beauty of the animals themselves -- including their distinctive patterns! In this two-part session, we will first learn about the basic natural history of giraffes and zebras, including identifying each of the recognized living species and subspecies. Then we will take a tour through world art history to first find examples of how each have been depicted in traditional African art and culture, and then in the arts of other world cultures from first encounters through the modern era. As time permits, we can also check out a few fun zebras and giraffes in modern pop culture. :) There will also be instructions provided for an OPTIONAL art activity which students are invited to try on their own, as well as a playlist of both assigned and optional videos to watch after each day's session. Each live session will consist of primarily slides accompanied by lecture, but there will be opportunities to ask questions, and of course the Classroom board will be available for open discussion before and after class as well. Students who choose to try the optional at-home art activity or any other class-inspired art can also post and discuss their creations on the Classroom board! This class is part of the ANIMALS IN WORLD ART HISTORY series.
其他詳情
父母的引導和規範
I teach from a zoological perspective, and as such just like in my regular science classes natural animal behaviors and bodily functions may come up in the course of discussion. I also do not censor works of art.
供應清單
Lesson materials are provided for free via the classroom, either as downloadable printables/files or links to online resources (web pages, videos, articles, etc.). The optional at-home art activity does require a few basic supplies which will be detailed in the instructions, including paper, foam, ink and brayer, and pastels or other coloring supplies. There is no requirement to complete this activity.

I'm a naturalist with a focus on zoology, and mainly teach animal science courses...but as part of my longstanding interests in both the animal kingdom AND art and culture, I began conducting independent research on how animals have been depicted in art around the world, and am now back in graduate school working on a second Masters thesis about it! :) In conjunction with my current research, I am now offering this series of short courses on different subjects in Animals in World Art History in addition to my regular zoology classes.
I also have nearly two decades experience as a home education advocate, including homeschooling my own children from preschool through high school. I am a big proponent of flexible learning, individualized education, and supporting fellow neurodiverse learners, so please don't hesitate to reach out to me with requests for accommodations or additional resources. We all learn in our own way and time, but everyone should have the chance to learn about how cool animals are! 😎
