課堂經歷

This 4-week course is a FLEX version combining several of my popular live classes including:
"ADHD Superpowers: The Hidden Advantages of ADHD"
"Fantastic Failures: Accidental Inventions"
"Failure IS an Option: 10 Famous People Who Failed Their Way to Success

This is a FLEX course, which means that there are no live meetings, but I will still be interacting frequently with students electronically and ask that they interact with each other as they are comfortable. We will interact using the classroom page and using Nearpod, a collaboration website that is fun, easy to use, and requires no email login information.

A a video of me presenting the content via Nearpod, Prezi, or PowerPoint will be provided every week. A graphic organizer or worksheet that accompanies the video will also be provided so students can synthesize what they are learning and keep track of it on paper. I will ask students to share their work with me and/or the class and give them feedback on this work. I will pose a weekly discussion question for students to answer in the classroom or Nearpod via video, picture, or chat and I will ask that classmates respond to each other's submissions. There will also be gamifed review quizzes on Nearpod for fun and interaction.

Week 1: ADHD Superpowers
Students learn about the advantages that many students with ADHD share such as creativity, energy, and adventurousness. Students will be asked to reflect on their own "superpowers" and strengths and share this with the class via text, picture, or video.

Week 2: ADHD All-Stars
Students will learn about 10 famous people with ADHD who likely succeeded, in part, because of the "superpowers" their ADHD gave them. Students will relate this content to the previous week by using their graphic organizer to keep track of what "superpowers" these celebrities have. Students will be asked to share via Nearpod or the Outschool classroom which notable person they relate to the most- whether it is someone on this list or who they found on their own.

Week 3: Fantastic Failures
Failure isn't always bad! Students will learn about ten inventions that were created by mistake. Students will keep track of the inventor's original goal and what he or she created when they came up short. They will be asked to reflect and share about a time in their lives when they or someone in their families made a mistake that turned out positively.

Week 4: Famous Failures
Students will learn about 10 famous people who failed their way to success. Students will reflect on the role perseverance and resilience plays in success.

I am a life-long educator and am very passionate about both of these topics- the strengths and gifts I feel students with ADHD have and the important role that the way we react to failure plays in success. I feel we as a society need to change the way we look at both ADHD and failure and look at the benefits of each. I am known for my energetic and caring teaching style, and I truly enjoy interacting with exceptional learners.

Note: The first two weeks of this class are a slowed down and slightly expanded version of the live class "ADHD Superpowers: The Hidden Advantages of ADHD." If your child has already taken this class or plans to take it, they will see this content twice, so you will likely want to pick one or the other.

I have been teaching for more than 15 years, and I have a Master's degree in education. Coursework in understanding and teaching exceptional students was required to complete this degree.

I have also had many students with ADHD in my classes. I became known for my approach and success with students who struggled with their ADHD. Whether it was my high-energy teaching style or just the soft spot I have for these students, they have seemed to excel in my class.

Recently I have become more interested in this topic. After some research, I gave a presentation on this subject matter to the staff in my home school assistance program. It was my goal to inform and also to encourage teachers to look at students with ADHD through the positive lens that they deserve to be seen in. It occurred to me that students who have ADHD could really use this information as well. Perhaps if they knew more about the benefits that can accompany their ADHD, they may be better able to harness them and feel better about themselves as a whole.
