Let's discover if it takes 24 steps to arrive at MIDDLE C, so come along with Miss Canda as we start our exciting journey on the keyboard! If you know your ABCs, Colors, and Numbers (1-30 a plus) then you will have even more fun learning the lay of the land of your keyboard/ piano and how to play it! NOTE: This class requires AT LEAST 2 learners in attendance. NO EXCEPTIONS. If only 1 learner, the Instructor will either 1) offer to transfer the student to a class with other learners, or 2) a refund will be issued. This course is generally for beginning students, or students who need a review of beginning piano and Middle C Position. Although not required, prior experience with a group pre-K or elementary music class or music appreciation class is a plus. In this class we will learn the music alphabet, the basics of fingering, black and white keys, naming notes and recognizing basic symbols in music theory. We will also gain a musical understanding of musical terms through imaginative play, interactive games, and writing and drawing music symbols. Our group class will meet twice a week. In our 5 week summer course we will cover the following topics: Week 1, Day 1: Welcome! Introduction Getting to Know You Getting to Know Your Keyboard Sitting at the Keyboard Good Hand Position Good Fingering - Numbering your fingers Freestyle Jam - we’ll end with an Instrumental for you to explore sounds on the keyboard Week 1, Day 2: Meet the 2s and 3s - Black Keys The Finger Numbers Game Learning to Read and Play - Beginning Black Key Songs (Introducing practice pieces for black keys) Freestyle Jam on the Black Keys - Beat Instrumental Week 2, Day 1: Reviewing Black Keys Is it High or Low? Basic Music Notes and their Values - Fun Activity Discuss practice piece Freestyle Jam - Instrumental Week 2, Day 2: The Music Alphabet Name the Lowest White Key and Highest White Key Finding C, D, and E Locating Middle C - Does it take 24 steps? Discuss practice piece Week 3, Day 1 The Music Alphabet Reviewing C, D, E Finding A, B, F, G Discuss new practice piece Performance Practice of Study Pieces Week 3, Day 2 Review locating White Keys and Middle C Is it Loud or Soft? Reviewing Notes and their Values - Fun Activity Discuss new practice piece Performance Practice of Study Pieces Week 4, Day 1 White Key Review - Fun Activity Introducing Middle C Position Practicing Short Pieces in Middle C Position Performance Practice of Study Pieces Week 4 Day 2 Interactive Musical Story - Intro to the Grand Staff Learning about 4/4 time - Music Addition Practicing Short Pieces in Middle C Position Performance Practice of Study Pieces Week 5, Day 1 Interactive Music Activity - Note Memorization Reviewing 4/4 time Practicing Short Pieces in Middle C Position Performance Practice of Study Pieces Week 5 Day 2 Performance Recital - Each student will be asked to play their favorite piece in Middle C Position. Final review with an interactive theory activities Freestyle Jam - Beat Instrumental With practice and review outside of class, students will begin to develop the discipline of learning their first instrument and be able to play songs in Middle C Position. Students will need to have access to a piano or a keyboard of at least 61 keys for class. Class Materials to purchase include a lesson book and 2 supplement workbooks which we will be listed in the Supply List below. (NOTE: The Same Books and Workbook materials will be used for this course as well as the 2nd course which will focus on note reading and a new hand position, C Position) For each topic covered the Instructor will demonstrate by example on her keyboard exercises for students to follow and practice, at times referring to a page in the lesson book or, demonstrating a musical idea not in the books to encourage critical thinking. The Instructor will also engage the class with interactive activities, some music educational games to help students retain music theory faster. Class will move at a comfortable pace, and Miss Canda is wants to make sure each student understands the topic before moving forward. Working with crayons or props, live chant or song will be used to help students remember the topic of discussion.

Hi there! I offer young minds effective ways to nurture their passion for music by guiding them with patience, creativity, and compassion.
Originally from MD, I received my Bachelor's degree in Music at George Washington University and my Master's Degree in Vocal Performance at Catholic University of America in Washington DC. Since 2002 I've performed and recorded professionally and have enjoyed teaching voice and piano to children and adults for over 20 years.
It's truly rewarding for me to motivate children to think outside the box as they learn concepts of music, theory, and ear training. I teach piano for ages 3 and up, from beginning to intermediate level (up to Level 3 proficiency) as well as offer basic keyboarding (playing with chords and playing by ear). I offer private voice for all levels and genres for ages 10 and up, and group vocal ensembles or musical theatre studies for students as young as 8 years old.
