In this engaging, self-paced course, learners will dive into the rich narratives of Transformers One and Wicked to analyze the journeys of their central heroes and villains. Through guided lessons, students will explore themes of power, morality, identity, and transformation, examining how characters like Megatron and Elphaba evolve into complex figures of villainy. By comparing their motivations, conflicts, and relationships with their respective heroes, students will uncover the deeper storytelling dynamics that challenge traditional notions of good and evil.

This course will be a guided analysis into the origin story of both the heroes and the villains of popular story franchises focusing on the most current origin stories.

This course examines the parallels and distinctions between Megatron’s rise in Transformers One and Elphaba’s transformation in Wicked, focusing on themes of power, identity, and the blurred line between good and evil. Students will engage in critical discussions, comparative analyses, and structured writing exercises to uncover how these origin stories challenge conventional storytelling norms. In this course, students will examine the archetypal hero figures in Transformers and Wicked, focusing on Optimus Prime and Glinda, respectively, exploring their roles, motivations, and how they embody the characteristics of traditional heroes.

The course will culminate in an essay writing assignment inviting students to synthesize their insights and present a well-supported stance on a central question.

With a focus on critical thinking, analytical writing, and creative interpretation, this course offers a unique opportunity to unravel the complexities of two iconic narratives that on the surface seem as different as two things can be!

Due to copyright laws, there will NOT be clips from either film in class. I may refer to certain parts of the films in my lessons, but I will not show parts of the film in my videos. All viewing of the film or film clips must be done independently.

Understanding Heroes

 Students will examine the traits that define heroes. They’ll explore how these characters’ values and decisions shape their roles while considering whether heroes can also have flaws. This lesson lays the groundwork for comparing heroes to villains.

Optimus Prime and Glinda

 Students will analyze the defining traits and motivations of heroes, focusing on Optimus Prime in Transformers: One and Glinda in Wicked. They’ll explore how their actions, values, and personal growth shape their roles as leaders and symbols of hope, while challenging traditional ideas of heroism and the moral complexities of their journeys.

 Students will analyze the defining traits and motivations of villains. They'll explore how circumstances, choices, and conflicts that shape their paths to villainy, challenging traditional views of what makes a character truly villainous.

 Students will focus on the transformation of D-16 into Megatron, and the announcement of Elphaba as the "Wicked Witch". They will utilize the villain archetypes analysis to explore how and why they believe the characters ended up on these journeys.

If my assignments are difficult for students to read, I can make them more ADHD/DYSLEXIA friendly. They are currently not large print, double spaced, etc. Please reach out if this is something that would benefit your student.

학부모 가이드

Parents should screen the films referenced in this course for any content prior to students viewing them. Examples of hero archetypes and villain archetypes will be discussed. Examples from books and films will be given in class. The films and books these examples come from should be screened before learners read or watch them. Reading and watching these examples will NOT be assigned as part of the course.

사전 요구 사항

Learners should have watched both Transformers One and Wicked prior to enrollment in this course. It would also be very helpful if students have seen the original Wizard of Oz and any of the original Transformer movies or TV shows!

수업 자료

Learners should have watched Wicked, Transformers One, The Wizard of Oz, and Transformers (2007). Students can also watch any of the other Transformer franchise movies as well!

I have been teaching this course in an in-person setting for homeschool students in our local community with different films and characters. I have been teaching writing and grammar courses on Outschool for several years. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice, but I have a minor concentration in film analysis with an honor's Senior Capstone in Film Study.
