🌊Welcome Ocean Adventurers!🦀

This 8-week semester course, learners will study of the world's oceans, exploring their physical characteristics, ecological importance, and the impact of human activities on these vast bodies of water. The class is structured to build knowledge progressively, with a focus on hands-on learning, critical thinking, and student engagement. Topics that will be covered include the physical characteristics of the oceans, currents, tides and waves, and ocean zones among others (please see full syllabus below).

Class structure: 
1. Introductions/ice breaker 
2. Direct instruction
3. Questions and discussions
4. Games & review

Lessons will involve a slideshow presentation (including multimedia content) incorporated with questions and opportunities for students to express their opinions respectfully with the class. I aim to cater to different learning styles and help students connect with the material through practical applications and visual aids. My lessons are structured to build foundational knowledge while encouraging exploration and critical thinking.

1. Identify and locate the major oceans of the world.

2. Understand the physical characteristics of oceans, including currents, tides, and marine ecosystems.
3. Explore the biodiversity within ocean habitats.

 Overview of the Earth's Oceans & topography (Mid-ocean ridges, oceanic trenches & plateaus, seamounts & guyots)

This class uses nearpod, blooket and gimkit. These are interactive, gamified learning platforms that enables students to review class material by answering questions in a quiz-style format. Students do not need an account or additional device to play the game. I will send a direct link to the game where the student clicks and joins the game directly. The class also utilizes google earth (via screen share) for an interactive exploration of some of the places we learn about. Please note that some video content is from Youtube (learners will watch no more than 4 minutes). Content is age appropriate and will be screen shared. Learners will not go onto any external websites during class. I also optional materials to help students dive deeper into the subject. They may include worksheets, YouTube videos, and review games.

I hold a Bachelors in Sociology & Social work and an Mphil in Sociology; and currently pursuing a graduate degree program in Education. As a passionate geography educator, I bring a deep understanding of the world’s diverse landscapes, cultures, and environments into the classroom. My love for teaching geography allows me to engage students with a mix of scientific knowledge and real-world applications. 
I strive to make complex concepts accessible and exciting, helping students not only grasp the physical characteristics of the oceans but also appreciate their global impact. My goal is to inspire curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for the world's oceans.
