This is an introductory course specially created for PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students. At this age, children learn best through play and hands-on activities. Students will learn about the knights and other royalty in the medieval age, as well as castles and coats of arms. Students will learn about famous pirates, and how pirates use maps and stars to navigate the seas in search of treasure. They will also learn some fun "pirate" phrases and vocabulary. Students will also be able to identify parts of a ship. Students will learn a brief history of Japanese ninjas. Students will learn about the ways ninjas are able to be such effective spies, such as techniques for hiding and escaping. Students will discuss their favorite superheroes, what powers they have and how they got those powers. Students will learn new vocabulary words related to the topic as well as interesting new facts. Students will observe and recreate many of these concepts in hands-on building/drawing/sculpting activities and projects, and through games and in-class discussion.
I'm so excited to share my love of these exciting adventurers with you! I've been teaching STEAM through fun, engaging topics like these to preschool through middle school for 6 years through an independent STEAM education company, and I'm really looking forward to connecting with new students here on Outschool. Not only will we be learning about knights, ninjas, pirates and superheroes--but we'll sneak in some colors, numbers and math, comparing and contrasting, observation, movement and more--all things that preK, kindergartners and 1st graders love to learn and practice!

Homework will be assigned on a weekly basis, but will be optional. Assignments will be used as a way to reinforce lesson material and to allow students to explore the topics in greater detail based on their own interests. Research, drawing, and fact-finding will be incorporated into these assignments, which will be shared and discussed at the beginning of the next class.수업 외 주당 0 - 1 시간

Students should provide their own paper, pencil, colored pencils or crayons, playdough or sculpting clay, building blocks such as lego-style bricks, duplos, bristle blocks, or wooden blocks. Some additional materials may be used for in-class projects and the optional homework assignments, but they will be simple, easily found, household items,and will be communicated a week prior to the class when they are needed. I am always happy to help families find an alternative material that can be adapted to use in class if any of these items are not available.

Some age appropriate discussion of weapons (swords, throwing stars, battles, etc) may occur in class as we discuss and imagine these adventurous characters. No emphasis will be placed on weapons or violence, but the nature of the topic sometimes brings a certain level of excitement to student conversation and sharing. The teacher will monitor this to keep it a safe space for all students and is open to parental feedback at all times.
