In each of the classes, we use a three-step method for academic inquiry:
STEP 1 = observe
STEP 2 = categorize
STEP 3 = analyze

These are the steps I coach my writing students through as they prepare to choose a paper topic, write a thesis statement, assemble their evidence, and draft their conclusions.

In this class, we will base our investigations on the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), a fascinating visual artist and thinker. His ideas about how humans should strive to live in harmony with the natural environment are more relevant today than ever. 

In this class, we will learn a little bit about Hundertwasser’s ecological notions, such as his enthusiasm for wild-growing, weedy green roofs, his battle against what he called the “tyranny of the straight line,” and his proposal that we should bury our elders under potted trees on our balconies.

We will exercise our critical thinking skills by working together to observe, categorize, and analyze motifs from Hundertwasser’s brilliantly colored, imaginatively utopian paintings.
