Students will learn various writing techniques in the realm of character development, ranging from heroes to villains to everyone in between. They will hone their writing skills and gain first-hand experience with the writing process. They will learn how to express their ideas in writing and through class discussion each week. They will gain confidence as writers as they grow in their skills and ability to share their work each week. And hopefully, they will have a lot of fun learning better how to bring their stories and dreams to life!

I am an aspiring author myself. I have spent many years going through the writing process on works of varying length. I have also always been an avid reader and lover of other storytelling media like film, TV, animation, and comics. Very often the discussion and analysis of other works is incredibly helpful in learning what works and what doesn't in stories. It is largely a hobby, but it is still ten years worth of experience. Additionally, my Bachelors and Masters degrees in history and theology, respectively, are both writing intensive, and I have had many opportunities to hone the craft of writing through that. The history degree in particular is immensely helpful with regards to writing, as the story of humanity is rich with storytelling inspiration that I love to draw from!

Homework is an essential part of this class. Students will be expected to try their hand at using the writing technique we discussed in class. They will then share their work in the following class. Assignments will vary from class to class. Sometimes students will need to write a short scene. Sometimes they will fill out worksheets or create outlines. The final meeting of this class will include a project, described above. Students should expect to spend approximately two hours per class meeting outside of class working on these activities. Assistance will be available at all times! Students can reach out to me throughout the week for help or inspiration!
