Beauty may be only skin deep, but makeup can give so much confidence to an already beautiful young person and boost self esteem. Natural looks for everyday use are incredibly helpful, but glitter and glam colors are my favorites. Playing with colors can be so much fun! In this one-time class, I will show a demonstration of two makeup looks while your child practices with whichever products you have available. We will first do a full natural face, then clean the natural face off with a...
Students will learn basic and glamorous makeup techniques. Social Emotional Standard: Self-Management The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations and to set and work toward personal and academic goals. 2A Individual demonstrates the skills to manage one’s emotions, thoughts, impulses and stress in constructive ways.
The instructor took several courses in stage makeup while studying theatre in college and has worn both natural and glamour makeup for her entire adult life.
Students should have access to their own makeup because they will be doing their own while I do the demonstration. I tried to put together a comprehensive list (prices vary), but we will work with whatever you have: A mirror Liquid or powder foundation Concealer Blush Primer/moisturizer (like ELF spray primer - $5 at Target, or I'm currently using Hello Fab Coconut Skin Smoothie Priming Moisturizer ($18) Eyeshadow: A nude palette (at least three colors in light, medium, and dark brown/beige/pink tones - see "L'Oreal Paris Colour Riche La Palette Nude Eye Shadow" $16 or "Urban Decay Naked Basics" $30 palettes for examples, though any brand will do.) in various colors... at least some browns and some brighter colors Eyeshadow in bright shades, again at least three, possibly metallic or glittery (like the "Urban Decay Elements Palette" $25 or Profusion Cosmetics Wanderlust $10) Eyeshadow primer (Tattoo Junkee's eyeshadow primer is $6.99 and is awesome) Shimmer/glow product - Anastasia Beverly Hills Moonchild Glow Kit is my current favorite - $20) Eyeliner - Mascara Lipstick in neutral shade Lipstick in brighter shade - My favorite lipstick brand is Tattoo Junkee Makeup wipes or baby wipes (my favorites are Neutrogena Makeup Remover Night Calming Cleansing Wipes, $10 for a twin pack) Brushes - at least one small eyeshadow brush about the size of a paintbrush, one powder or blush brush, and at least one very small, thin eyeliner brush (This link shows the different types: https://www.purewow.com/beauty/makeup-brush-guide). You can buy a whole brush set for $10-12 or you can buy them individually. Translucent powder Setting spray (can get a small bottle of Nyx matte spray for $3.49 at Target, though they have other kinds, and any kind is fine)
Kids with sensitive skin should be careful about putting makeup on their faces, but we aren't putting anything on their faces that shouldn't be designed to go there. I wrote the following in response to a question about brands for makeup for sensitive skin: Some of my favorite brands claim to be good for sensitive skin in general. Urban Decay is my go to brand, and it claims to be hypoallergenic. But that doesn't mean it would work for everyone (nothing does). And different colors are more abrasive than others. The Nude pallettes are generally softer and safer, but as you said, not the bright and fun colors. Reds, purples (because they contain reds), and metallics are going to be the most abrasive. Green used to be the worst color. I actually talk in my Wizard of Oz class about why it was so dangerous for them to choose green makeup for Margaret Hamilton. Burts Bees and MAC are also really good. I found this article when I was looking for some more info to answer your question: http://www.besthypoallergenicmakeup.com/hypoallergenic-eye-makeup/. For foundation and my makeup wipes, honestly, Neutrogena actually does a really good job. It's inexpensive and drugstore brand, but it has worked better than a lot of the more expensive brands.
For over fifteen years, I have created and directed innovative programs that incorporate literature and pop culture into educational experiences through The Imaginorium, where I am Artistic & Education Director. Theatre, art, science, cosplay,...
