-apply comprehension strategies to new texts
-determine the best answers for comprehension questions about a text
-think deeply about the bigger “whys” in a text (author’s purpose, literary techniques, theme, etc.) 
-discuss elements of a text in writing or speaking

I have a B.S. degree in English Education and English Literature and have taught ELA in the secondary classroom for over ten years.

All reading will occur in class under the guidance and support of the teacher. Texts excerpts will be provided digitally via the Outschool classroom and/or during class via screen share.
Reading is encouraged between classes  (for homework) to practice the skills, but is optional.

The teacher will informally and frequently assess the students throughout class to ensure comprehension and mastery of the skills. Assessment may look like multiple choice questions, select the best quote/line from the text, open-ended questions, or free response questions. Students will answer verbally and/or in written form through the Zoom chat.

We will read excerpts from classic literature, nonfiction informational articles, and historical texts such as American presidential speeches or speeches from other prominent public figures. Please view the class description for the list of texts.
