This ongoing world history class explores three essential questions: 1. Can an individual make a difference? 2. How is power or influence gained, used, and justified? 3. What causes change? Each week, we will look at the life and influence of one individual, seeking answers to these questions. The course focuses intentionally on cultivating a balanced and inclusive understanding of world history and the forces of change over time, while at the same time cultivating hard core critical...
1. Students will analyze particular primary and secondary sources to understand the historical influence of an individual. 2. Students will synthesize across primary and secondary sources to identify patterns of historical interpretation. 3. Students will improve their discussion and collaborative problem solving skills. 4. Students will identify patterns of influence in specific global regions, time periods, and fields of human activity.
After completing a BA in history education, I did a highly competitive, one-year graduate fellowship in African History at Emory University in Atlanta. Following that experience, I have spent twenty two years as a history teacher and school administrator in three countries: nine years in Atlanta, Georgia; twelve years in India; and one year in El Salvador. This broad range of experience has made me deeply passionate about teaching young people around the world about the full range of human capacity and limitations--looking at people from all times and places. I love history and helping young people see just how relevant the academic study of history can be for successfully entering adulthood.
Students will want to bring a pen and paper to sessions and may want access to a search engine during class, so that they can complete short two- or three-minute research tasks during the session, where desirable.

Nothing violent or graphic is included in this course. We do actively seek to include the contributions of individuals from all regions of the world and from groups that have been traditionally marginalized. This is done in a way that prioritizes and celebrates the individuals' own voices while training students in the skills of an academic historian, so that they can recognize and appropriately trace how power has operated in the past to either include or marginalize.
From week to week, the selection of sources will change, depending on the person we are examining. Foremost emphasis is placed on primary sources and the teacher will include a full list of sources each week for further exploration and reading.
I have been immersed in the world of education for more than twenty years, first as a history and psychology teacher and then as an international school administrator for eleven years. For four years, I worked to found a Centre for Imagination at...
