This exciting ecology class will expose students to the unusual and fascinating wildlife on the island of Madagascar. This "hotspot" of biodiversity is home to unique animals and serves as an excellent example of island ecology. Topics covered include (minor changes may occur based on student interest): 1) Prehistoric Madagascar and how isolation affected evolution 2) What does it mean to be 'endemic'? How does that affect the ecology of a species? 3) Case studies of several Madagascan...
Students will increase their knowledge of zoology and ecology of Madagascar by learning about the history and diversity of wildlife on the island. Students will gain awareness of conservation issues threatening some Madagascan species. As a side effect, students may become highly enthusiastic about learning science!
I got my bachelor's degree in biology (wildlife ecology) and my Master's in science education. I am a high school biology, environmental science and zoology teacher and have experience working with many animals. Animals are my favorite thing to teach!
