My goal for this class is to help students become better readers, and better at reading comprehension, but my ultimate goal is to instill the love of reading and learning in these students. There is so much we can learn from the past and the people who came before us and I want the students who take this class to become lifelong readers and learners.

In this fast-paced ongoing class, learners will read one Who Was/Is…, What Was/Is…, Where Was/Is… book per week. (Students will need to obtain their own copy of the book prior to class and read through the entire book.) During each class, we will have a short introduction to meet our classmates and the teacher. After introductions, we will discuss the information presented in the book as well as discussing the literary elements and text features from the book.

Each week, students should bring three quotes or summaries of important information they took away from the book during their own reading. Each learner will have time to share and be expected to share at least one piece of information, possibly more depending on the conversation and how many students are in class.

We will discuss the literary elements and text features present in the book. These may be maps, photos, charts, or graphs.

During each class, I will also have comprehension questions to go over with learners to make sure they read and understand the information presented in the book.

As time permits, at the end of class, we will do a fun Kahoot! or Quizlet based on the information in the reading for the week.

I am a trained educator for K-8th grade with a love of history. I have spent countless hours researching and understanding history for my own education as well as being able to teach learners. While I do not have a degree specifically in history, it is a passion of mine and I consider myself well-informed and unbiased. I approach sensitive information in my classes with an open mind and do research on marginalized groups prior to class to make sure that they are represented correctly. I use the aid of the Department of Human Services as a guideline for respect and protecting civil liberties in class. https://www.dhs.gov/office-civil-rights-and-civil-liberties

As a substitute classroom teacher over the past 5 years, I have been going into as many different classrooms in as many different situations as possible. I enjoy working with diverse student groups and am excited to help your learner understand history through others' perspectives.
