Students will be presented weekly with a new reading strategy to help build their comprehension while reading. Following a brief lesson, the students will participate in an engaging and interactive read aloud where they will answer questions, participate in discussion, and explore the text in a deeper way. After the read aloud students will then express their thoughts and ideas about the text in a fun and meaningful way. Through the use of live video meetings, lively discussions, and interactive read aloud prompts and questions students will delve deeply into reading comprehension focusing on a new skill per week. Class Time will be structured in the following way: Week 1: Introductions and class expectations will start each of our weekly classes. The teacher will then lead an engaging and interactive mini lesson of the reading comprehension skill making and confirming predictions, using a combination of lecture, visuals, and student involvement. We will make predictions about the book's events and characters (before reading, during reading, and following the reading) all while utilizing the weekly skills taught in the mini lesson. Following the interactive read aloud, there will be a short time for students to discuss and ask each other questions in regards to the book, as the teacher facilitates, monitors, and guides students through their discussion. Week 2: Introductions and class expectations will start each of our weekly classes. The teacher will then lead an engaging and interactive mini lesson of the reading comprehension skill visualizing, using a combination of lecture, visuals, and student involvement. Students will create meaningful visuals throughout and after the reading of our book in order to describe important events from our interactive reading, all while utilizing the weekly skills taught in the mini lesson. Following the interactive read aloud, there will be a short time for students to discuss and ask each other questions in regards to the book, as the teacher facilitates, monitors, and guides students through their discussion. Week 3: Introductions and class expectations will start each of our weekly classes. The teacher will then lead an engaging and interactive mini lesson of the reading comprehension making connections, using a combination of lecture, visuals, and student involvement. We will practice making relevant connections (text to text, text to self, and text to world) before our reading, during the reading, and following our reading, all while utilizing the weekly skills taught in the mini lesson. Following the interactive read aloud, there will be a short time for students to discuss and ask each other questions in regards to the book, as the teacher facilitates, monitors, and guides students through their discussion. Week 4: Introductions and class expectations will start each of our weekly classes. The teacher will then lead an engaging and interactive mini lesson of the reading comprehension skill asking and answering questions, using a combination of lecture, visuals, and student involvement. Students will practice developing questions and finding their answers within the text to aid their overall comprehension of a text. Students will develop questions about the book's events and characters (before reading, during reading, and following the reading) all while utilizing the weekly skills taught in the mini lesson. Following the interactive read aloud, there will be a short time for students to discuss and ask each other questions in regards to the book, as the teacher facilitates, monitors, and guides students through their discussion. Week 5: Introductions and class expectations will start each of our weekly classes. The teacher will then lead an engaging and interactive mini lesson of the reading comprehension skill inferring, using a combination of lecture, visuals, and student involvement. Students will utilize their own schema and the text clues in order to create meaningful inferences about the book's events and characters (before reading, during reading, and following the reading) all while utilizing the weekly skills taught in the mini lesson. 学習到達目標
Students will improve their reading comprehension which is a skill that will be able to be applied to other books and texts they read in the future. This course will help your child to have a deeper understanding of the texts they read, which will support their love for reading.
During week 1, students will be able to make, confirm and adjust predictions as they engage in a text. This skill will help students to make goals for reading, retain information, and think deeply about a text. Overall this will help students to deeply comprehend a text that they are reading and can be applied to their future reading.
During week 2, students will be learning the importance of visualizing while reading. As students create these mental images, they will be able to track the main events and changes with the characters in a meaningful way which leads to a deeper understanding of the text. This skill will help students to comprehend future reading and is an especially important skill for the comprehension of complex texts and chapter books.
During week 3, students will be able to make connections between a variety of previously read texts, events and information they know, as well as make connections to the world around them. This skill helps students to develop understanding of critical ideas that are presented in the text as well as keeps readers actively engaged in the text. Skills such as making connections are critical to meaningful, purposeful reading that can and should be applied to all texts they read nonfiction as well as fiction.
During week 4, students will learn to ask relevant questions and get answers from the text to deepen their overall comprehension of the books they read. This skill is especially important in non fiction texts, but is also applicable in fiction texts. When students are able to ask and answer questions they are more engaged as a reader, are able to synthesis new information, and learn valuable information from a text.
During week 5, students will learn the critical reading skill of making inferences while reading. This skill helps readers to read beyond the text and truly comprehend the meaning of the text. As a reader this is a powerful skill to possess, as this level of reading and understanding is the goal of reading for comprehension. Lifelong readers use this skill in all types of reading and this skill can be applied to a variety of complex texts and chapter books to fully understanding fiction texts.
