The Book Thief is such an amazing story. Set in Nazi Germany and follows the life of a young German girl as she navigates this time in her country. With Death as the narrator, who knows what could happen! Why is she called a book thief? What does she learn through the experiences she has in daily life? Why does she meet such unique people? What happens to the people in her life that we grow to love and connect with? Through this class, we will break this book apart, section by section to dissect the book, themes, characters, and much more. Each week, you will be given a list of short answer questions to respond to while reading. You can either write the answers on a printed version of the worksheet or type the answers (but please add the questions before your answers if you type it). Either way, it will need to be submitted by the end of the week, preferably before you complete the final week's assignment. At the end of each week, there will be a "quiz" of sorts to ensure understanding with multiple choice questions, matching, and short answers. Both the short answer questions during the week and the "quiz" at the end of the week will be checked and returned with comments. There will also be questions given in the classroom throughout the week to be discussed and students can discuss the short answer questions as well in the classroom.

Before we begin reading, we will take a walk through the unit topics and chapter titles to see what we think will happen in the story. We will make our predictions which we will refer back to at the end of the book. As we go through the book, we will answer comprehension questions through a classroom discussion and throughout each section to ensure our understanding. We will also check understanding each week with questions for the group for students to respond to each other. At the end of the book, we will complete an essay to explain our take on this amazing novel and discuss if our predictions came true. There will be choices for the essays and you will only have to pick one and write it (please write your essay question at the top of your answer page). This will be turned in and "graded" (revised with notes) at the end of class.

There are bad words in this book along with adult themes. This will be presented honestly but on the level of the students. Since this book was set in Nazi Germany, there will be more adult themes and the realization of what life was really like during this period in history.

Hello! My name is Teacher Kim. I am born and raised in the southern United States. I have been a teacher for over 15 years and worked with children and adults of all ages both in public school, private school, and private tutoring as well! I absolutely love teaching!
In my classroom, we will focus on building our reading comprehension skills, higher order thinking skills, and have some fun while learning grammar. We will do this through reading, discussion, games, and so much more!
I have a dual bachelor's degree in Early Childhood and Elementary Education and my master's degree in middle school education (teaching and learning). I have also received my TESOL and TEFL for working with children and adults learning English. I just really love learning and teaching!
I believe that learning should be fun and engaging. It is not about being serious all the time. There should be fun, games, and brain breaks to encourage our minds to fully grow and develop. I love to help students think outside the box and engage their brains in thinking of things in different ways.
I have been married to my husband for over 13 years and I am the mother of 2 beautiful children and homeschool them as well. We have a sweet guinea pig for our pet who we absolutely adore. In my spare time, I love reading, playing games, spending time with my children, and just relaxing when possible.
I am so excited to teach your child and help your child grow his/her comprehension skills! See you in the classroom!!!
