In this course, students will be introduced to the history and symbols connected to the celebration of St. Patrick's Day. The course begins with introductory activities that start with students creating Irish names. The introductory activities will continue with a video presentation on why St. Patrick's Day is celebrated and the history of the holiday. A review of places in the world where St. Patrick's Day is celebrated will also be presented. Before beginning instruction on the symbols of St. Patrick's Day, the students will listen and follow the lyrics to the song: Ireland’s Call. After Ireland's Call, the instruction will focus on the commonalities shared between the St. Patrick's Day symbols of shamrocks, Leprechauns, and the Blarney Stone. The instruction will cover the history of the use of the shamrock, the Irish legend of Leprechauns, and how the magical effects of the Blarney Stone are explained in Irish legend. The discussion of St. Patrick's Day symbols will also cover information on the history of why people wear green as part of the celebration of the holiday. After discussing the symbols of St. Patrick's Day, students will read a poem entitled Leprechaun Language. This poem will be used as a foundation for helping students become more familiar with St. Patrick's Day terminology--such as Erin Go Bragh. After discussing terminology, students will be introduced to the structure of limerick writing. Several examples of limericks will be shared with students. After sharing limerick samples, students will be asked to write a limerick using a St. Patrick's Day symbol or topic of interest. Traditional Irish folk music will be played while students write their limericks. When completed, the students will have an opportunity to share their limericks with the class. The instruction will end with a video of an Irish dance group performing an Irish Step Dance from Riverdance and five comprehension questions designed to assess the student's understanding of the learning objectives.
