Sight words don't have to be a mystery. We can sound them out! During each lesson learners will practice spelling, reading, and writing four new sight words. Special attention will be paid to the letters in the words as well as the sounds that the letters (and/or letter combinations) make so that learners can build their phonetic awareness and word-level reading fluency. Learners will also practice using each new word in a sentence that we will write together. Class Structure: 1. One sight word at a time will be displayed for students to see. I will read the word aloud to introduce it. Then, learners will participate in a word study. We will take a look at each of the letters in the word as we spell it aloud together. After that, explicit instruction will be provided about the letter sounds and spelling patterns that are present in the word. (The number of letters in the word may not be the same as the number of sounds we hear in the word. For example, the word "made" has four letters but only makes three sounds as the e is silent). I will guide learners in isolating each of the sounds we hear that make up the target word and discussing any spelling rules or phonics sounds that appear in the target word before we practice blending the word as a group. 2. Let's move! Next, we will practice spelling our focus word using chants, cheers, or movement activities. We may pretend to be opera singers and spell our sight word in our best opera voice. We may pretend to be basketball players and "dribble" each letter in the word before shooting our ball into an imaginary basket. Or, we might imagine we are frogs and jump in the air as we say each letter in the word. The possibilities are endless! 3. After getting some wiggles out with a sight word chant or cheer we will practice writing the word we just spelled. 4. Last, we will make a sentence using a sentence frame that highlights the sight word that we just finished spelling and writing. During this portion of class we will pay special attention to using proper capitalization and punctuation as we write. ***This process will repeat for three to four target words during each class meeting. If time allows, we will practice additional words. =============== Class schedule: =============== ****April**** Week of April 7th: careful, should, thought, station Week of April 14th: found, these, always, would Week of April 21st: follow, around, answer, going Week of April 28th: because, best, which, before ****May**** Week of May 5th: again, should, where, enough Week of May 12th: almost, begin, might, sometimes Week of May 19th: large, follow, another, change Week of May 26th: around, because, upon, would ****June**** Week of June 2nd: came, very, some, much Week of June 9th: small, about, funny, when Week of June 16th: going, other, want, write Week of June 23rd: from, here, please, first Week of June 30th: before, down, only, thing ****July**** Week of July 7th: many, them, jump, little Week of July 14th: said, your, where, should Week of July 21st: high, bright, delight, tonight Week of July 28th: might, night, knight, highlight ***August*** Week of August 4th: NO CLASS Week of August 11th: NO CLASS Week of August 18th: Homophones: eight, ate, brake, break Week of August 25th: Homophones: flour, flower, week, weak ***September*** Week of September 1st: Homophones: hair, hare, stair, stare Week of September 8th: Homophones: steal, steel, hear, here Week of September 15th: Homophones: blue, blew, right, write Week of September 22nd: Homophones: buy, bye, rows, rose Week of September 29th: ****NO CLASS**** ****October**** Week of October 6th: Homophones: our, hour, peak, peek Week of October 13th: Homophones: flea, flee, sea, see Week of October 20th: Homophones review game (eight, ate, brake, break, flour, flower, week, weak, hair, hare, stair, stare, steal, steel, hear, here) Week of October 27th: Homophones review game (blue, blew, right, write, buy, bye, rows, rose, our, hour, peak, peek, flea, flee, sea, see) ****November**** Week of November 3rd: said, again, have, give Week of November 10th: some, come, from, because Week of November 17th: Glued Sound (ink): think, sink, drink, wink Week of November 24th: November Review Game
