""Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. . ." With these words, the reader is ushered into an isolated gray stone mansion on the windswept Cornish coast, as the second Mrs. Maxim de Winter recalls the chilling events that transpired as she began her new life as the young bride of a husband she barely knew. For in every corner of every room were phantoms of a time dead but not forgotten—a past devotedly preserved by the sinister housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers: a suite immaculate and untouched, clothing laid out and ready to be worn, but not by any of the great house's current occupants. With an eerie presentiment of evil tightening her heart, the second Mrs. de Winter walked in the shadow of her mysterious predecessor, determined to uncover the darkest secrets and shattering truths about Maxim's first wife—the late and hauntingly beautiful Rebecca." Summary from Goodreads.com. In our class, students will have the opportunity to read and discuss the book Rebecca. In each class, the teacher will provide relevant background information in relation to the setting of the novel and lead a discussion of the book. The book was first published in 1938 and relevant historical background information will be taught by the teacher, as well as a lesson on the Gothic novel. Through the discussion, we will explore the plot, character development, themes, symbols, and other literary devices. We will then complete the learning activity for that class. Some of these activities include creating a character development map, a journal entry, free-style writing, etc. Then at the end of class, we will each come up with a question to keep in mind as we read the next chapters. *if you do not see a time that works for you, please feel free to request another time* Reading Schedule: Meeting #1: Chapters 1-8 Meeting #2: Chapters 9-15 Meeting #3: Chapters 16-21 Meeting #4: Chapters 22-27
