 Week 1
Lesson 1
A Character Story
A Character Story Character Reading Passages is a story that describes the main character's traits are a description of a character’s personality. These are revealed to a reader either by the narrator, by other characters, or through deeds. Learning character traits helps a reader predict and understand the motives and actions of the character.
Lesson 2
Compare and Contrast Story
Comparing and contrasting stories are fundamental to the characters and story development. The ability to compare and contrast is one of the first higher-order reading comprehension skills students are introduced to. The ability to categorize and compare things in terms of their differences and similarities is one of the stages of cognitive development.
 Week 2
Lesson 3
Figurative Language Story
Figurative Language Story Reading stories that include figurative language allows kids to effectively communicate an idea that’s otherwise not easy to understand because of its abstract nature or complexity. It will also improve their writing skills and give them a better tool for expressing their emotions.
Lesson 4
Illustrations Inference Story
Illustrations Inference Story Helping your child understand when information is implied, or not directly stated, will improve her skill in drawing conclusions and making inferences. These skills will be needed for all sorts of school assignments, including reading, science, and social studies.
 Week 3
Lesson 5
Main Idea Story
Main Idea Story Being able to find the main idea of a passage is a key component of the reading process. This skill starts in kindergarten and builds over the course of a student’s entire schooling. Without being able to identify the main idea, a reader would not be able to fully understand the text.
Lesson 6
Moral Summary Story
Moral Summary Story Reading Moral and understanding the moral of a story helps students infer, draw conclusions, and teach a lesson.
 Week 4
Lesson 7
Point of View Story
Point of View Story Understanding the point of view helps students effectively analyze literature, improves their critical thinking skills, helps them understand the author’s purpose, and increases their ability to recognize bias.
Lesson 8
Non-Fiction Story
Non-Fiction Story Reading nonfiction is quite different from reading fiction. It’s denser and more complex, so students need a different kind of approach—one that’s active and analytical. We will also learn some of the characteristics of non-fiction stories.
The ultimate goal is that I want each student to be proud and excited when they can read and understand a book or story all by themselves!
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
This class will use Google Forms for the story and the comprehension questions. I will send a Google Form link that will include our Reading passage and comprehension questions. You DO NOT have to have a Google Account to open and use the link. It is simply a link that I will provide at least 12 hours before class starts. Also if there are issues with the link I will share my screen for your child to read the passage.
