Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Fluency (1st/2nd Grade)

So your child has started to read....now what?  This class will take emerging readers through both fiction and non-fiction passages to work on their fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.  During our time together in class, we will begin each class by sharing any personal connections to the topic of the day.  Each week, I will post on the classroom page what the topic/story is for the week. Then we will work a bit on our reading fluency. Fluency is the ability for someone to read with speed, accuracy, and proper expression. In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently whether they are reading aloud or silently.  Students will work on their fluency with some of the most commonly used words and phrases in books (and some from our passage for that lesson).   I will help guide students through the fluency part and students will be encouraged to keep practicing/reading these after class is over at a speed they are comfortable with.  Next, we will be reading a short passage together. All passages will be provided in printable form at the beginning of each week on the classroom page. These passages are at about a later first grade/second grade reading level.  Passages and questions will be posted to the classroom page prior to class for students to print.  If you are unable to print the page, it will also be shown in class, but please bring along paper/pencil to use for responses.  Students will be supported as we use our decoding skills and fluency together to ensure accuracy of the passage.  Students will then answer questions about what we read together.  Students will write out responses with the support of the teacher.  (If your child needs extra support with writing, please let me know so I can make any necessary recommendations or accommodations!)  The reading comprehension questions will cover a variety of topics, such as characters, setting, vocabulary, problem, solution, plot, cause/effect, making connections, synonyms/antonyms, and more!
