I am ready and willing to help your learner. My tutoring class is ongoing, so students can easily sign up to meet consistently or pop in when they need extra support. You can email me ahead of class to alert me to specific writing questions/needs, or we can start with the introductory paragraph and work through the entire essay writing process. Questions we answer during class: - How do writers connect multiple paragraphs to build an essay? - Why is the 5-paragraph essay essential to master? - What is the "big picture purpose" of the essay, and how should it be organized? - Exactly what types of sentences go in the introductory paragraph? - What is the purpose of a thesis statement, and where is the thesis placed? - Exactly what types of sentences should be in each body paragraph? - How do you find the textual evidence necessary to support your thesis statement? - Exactly what types of sentences go in the conclusion paragraph? Students will learn the formula for a successful 5-paragraph essay. I have adapted this formula from the PEAS Model (https://www.duq.edu), adjusted it to be age-appropriate, and included ALL elements of the five-paragraph essay. I can help your student craft an essay assigned by a school teacher. Also, I can provide an essay topic and then lead the student through the writing process. Hello! My name is Melanie, and while I have public school and homeschool experience, I have been a private school teacher for twenty-five years. I am the author of a published picture book called Will's Ride. It is a lovely picture book about a boy and his adaptive bike, which I wrote for my son with cerebral palsy.
The combination of an experienced private school teacher and the mom of a special needs child makes me a unique teacher. I can recognize when students need a challenge and when they need consistent repetition for new knowledge to move into long-term memory. I enjoy hosting a Facebook page for teachers called Teaching Matters and a Youtube channel called The Teacher's Playbook.
