During the first lesson, we will complete a reading assessment to determine the student's reading level. I will choose books and reading passages based on the student’s reading ability and interests. The structure of the class will vary slightly depending on the age, reading level, and individual needs of the student. The class will begin with pre-reading activities. We will complete a short activity related to vocabulary, sight words, or decoding. During guided reading, the student (and occasionally the teacher, when appropriate) will read the story aloud, with pauses for discussion. At the end of the class we will have a brief review or closing activity.

Students enrolled in this course should know letter sounds and be able to read simple words.
