Plum: Know Your Body is medically accurate and fun education about puberty, growing pains, and everything girls' life. It’s a safe, supportive environment for your daughter to learn about the changes happening to her body, mind, and emotions. She will walk away with less fear and more confidence about keeping her body strong and resilient through her teen years. This 7-week program consists of upbeat interactive lectures with open discussions, review games, and guided self-reflections to go with each week’s lesson. Your daughter will receive the Plum: Know Your Body Workbook to complete these activities.

The Plum Difference: This is puberty education 2.0! The average program regurgitates basic facts about hormone changes, bra sizes, and cleanliness during periods. Plum: Know Your Body is based on how today's social, cultural, and environmental landscapes influence adolescent girl development. This is emerging science that I've been involved in as a clinician and professor of Child Growth and Cognitive Development. As such, Plum: Know Your Body's curriculum addresses puberty and health in the context of giving girls guidance on handling the pressure to be hypersexual, ultrafeminine, flawless, and much more while also countering behaviors that are directing this generation of girls to develop too fast.

The Origins of Plum: I designed Plum: Know Your Body during my time in the Women’s, Infants, and Children’s Specialty Health Department of a county hospital. I’ve since delivered it to hundreds of parents and daughters who now enjoy more connection and less conflict when discussing girl stuff! Specifically, girls like the program because it’s not the embarrassing chat they fear to have with their parents nor the typical boring lecture at school. Parents like the program for its delivery of factual content that their daughters need to know but refuse to hear from them.

Curriculum
Week 1: Understanding the changes she’s feeling and seeing, from periods to pimples to mood swings.
Week 2: Going from self-conscious to confident about her true self.
Week 3: Speaking up for her needs and not going with the flow.
Week 4: Naming and getting comfortable with her feelings; both the good and the bad.
Week 5: Is she my friend, should I hang out with them, and handling other friendship drama.
Week 6: How to get unstuck and keep moving forward when her life gets tough.
Week 7: What to eat for the unique needs of the developing female body and eating behaviors to support her busy lifestyle.

No prior knowledge is needed for this class. As always, learning is only fun and meaningful when students ask questions in my judgement-free classroom.

Please understand that I embrace a “know more, fear less” philosophy for this puberty and girls’ health education program. For that reason, the anatomical names for the physical changes of the body and the social behaviors of youth will be discussed. If you have any questions, concerns, or feedback I'm always here for you as your doctor-friend.
