このクラスで学べること

英語レベル - B1
米国の学年 3 - 6
Beginner レベル向け
In this engaging, ongoing class, learners aged 8-13 will embark on an exciting coding journey within Minecraft: Education Edition. Guided by their very own Agent—a coding companion—learners will explore how to write code, solve real-world problems, and bring their creative ideas to life in a fun, interactive environment. No prior coding experience is required for this course, making it perfect for young learners interested in both Minecraft and coding.

What Your Learner Will Achieve:
The class begins with learners getting to know their Agent, learning to program it to move, manage inventory, and perform basic tasks. From there, your learner will help shape their own adventure:

Collaborate with Dr. Barwin at the Animal Research Center (ARC), exploring different habitats and learning how coding can be used to address environmental challenges.
Or, they can dive into building their very own Minecraft City, designing roads, parks, and buildings to bring their dream world to life.
Whether solving environmental challenges or building a bustling virtual city, your learner will develop essential coding skills that inspire creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Skills Your Learner Will Develop:
Throughout the course, learners will gain key computational thinking and coding skills, such as:

Algorithms
Sequencing
Loops & Nested Loops
Conditionals & Nested Conditionals
Testing & Debugging
Boolean Operators
Events & Event Handlers
Variables & Functions

These skills form the foundation of their programming knowledge, helping them become confident coders and creative thinkers.

Class Structure:
Each 1-hour class is designed to balance learning with fun. Here’s how a typical class is structured:

Discussion (20 minutes): Your learner will be introduced to the day’s coding activity, brainstorming solutions and learning key coding concepts to help them succeed.

Programming Time (30-40 minutes): Learners will work independently on their coding tasks, using Google Slides to document their progress with screenshots of their code. This helps them track their growth and complete reflection questions to deepen their understanding.

Reflection (5 minutes): As a group, learners will reflect on what they learned, any challenges they faced, and how they overcame them.

Badge Challenge: Once a lesson is completed, the next session will challenge learners to earn a badge based on their performance and creativity.

Badge Challenge:

Throughout the course, learners will have the chance to earn badges for their accomplishments. These badges highlight their growth, creativity, and problem-solving skills:

"Master of Speed!": This badge is earned by the learner who excels in the Human vs. The Agent Time Challenge, showing off their speed and accuracy in coding.

"Master Builder": Recognizes exceptional creativity in building intricate or complex structures in Minecraft, from roads and parks to entire cities.

"MVC (Most Valuable Coder)": Awarded to the learner who stands out for their coding excellence, collaboration, and leadership. This badge celebrates those who help others, find innovative solutions, and make a positive impact on the class.

These badges are designed to motivate learners, celebrate their achievements, and add a layer of fun and competition to the course.

学習到達目標
Students will build digital fluency skills, promote community, encourage a coding mindset, and develop computational thinking skills while completing Units 1 to 10.

Unit 1: Computing with Minecraft: The Agency and Basic Moves and The Agent (Sequencing and Variables)
Six activities where learners will learn how to Code the Agent using on-chat commands to move in different directions.

Unit 2: Computing with Minecraft: City Planner ( Coordinates/Positions and Loops)
Three activities where learners will explore new coding blocks and how they can assist them when building in Minecraft.

Unit 3: Computing with Minecraft: Parks and Recreation ( Sequencing, Loops and Variables)
Three activities where learners will expand their knowledge of MakeCode as they code their Agent to build a park in their Minecraft city.

Unit 4: Computing with Minecraft: A Zoo (Loops and Functions)
Three activities where learners will explore how code can be used to facilitate imagination and creativity. Students will focus on creating code with increasingly complex code while using the BUILDER blocks.

Unit 5: Computing with Minecraft: Wind Power ( Functions and Abstraction)
Three activities where learners will expand on their fluency in coding to create a wind farm.

Unit 6: Coding FUNdamentals 1: Sea Turtle Assistance (Algorithms, sequencing, and loops)
Five activities where learners must clean up sea turtle nesting grounds by coding the Agent. (Algorithms, sequencing, and loops)

Unit 7: Polar Bear Rescue (Sequencing and Conditional loops)
Four activities where learners utilize pseudocode to help them plan out their program to help the polar bear cub find its family.

Unit 8: Gray Wolves ( Nested Loops)
Four activities where learners test and code the Agent to secure the livestock at the farm from the gray wolves.

Unit 9: Ganymede & Saturn’s Ring (Boolean logic)
Five activities where learners utilize Boolean logic in conditionals in their code to obtain rock samples from Ganymede and precious metals from Saturn’s ring.

Unit 10: Running out of time: Dinosaur Run ( Events and Variables)
Three activities where learners combine different event blocks to sneak past the dinosaur, navigate through the temple, and use the Time Gate to teleport back.

Hi, I'm Mareeka Edwards, a proud homeschooling mom with a background in Early Childhood Montessori Education. Before pursuing my passion for teaching, I worked as a Medical Laboratory Technician and was on the path to becoming a Chemical Engineer. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, I had to pause my Chemical Engineering studies. But as they say, "Everything happens for a reason." This led me to open my own tutoring company in 2011, which eventually grew into themed summer camps, a home daycare, and now, online tutoring with Outschool.

Teaching is my passion, and I firmly believe that learning takes many forms. In our home, we’re always exploring new ideas or honing existing skills.

I’m excited to teach Math, Phonics, Reading & Comprehension, Spelling, Coding, and Science classes for learners aged 4 to 12.

In my classroom, learners will have their mics on throughout the session to encourage interaction and collaboration. I kindly ask that everyone raise their hands before answering questions and show respect by not speaking over one another. My goal is to create a classroom environment that feels like home—where learners can be themselves and express their thoughts freely.
