🌟 The student will receive a full week of spelling instruction, activities, and practice with only one live meeting. What is a flipped classroom? A flipped classroom is a pedagogical model that flips traditional lectures and homework. Students have access to the instructional content before the class meeting to consume the content and practice the skills. This makes the class meeting time more effective and efficient by focusing specifically on the challenging material and receiving answers to important questions. 🙃 With the "flipped classroom" style of teaching, students will receive instructional content throughout the week from instructional videos. This allows students to consume the content at a time that fits their schedules best while receiving feedback from the teacher throughout the week and additional help before the spelling test. The first video is released on Monday along with the assigned spelling list and worksheets. Word usage and spelling patterns are taught as well as any spelling rules that apply. A homework assignment is given to complete after the video lesson. 📝 In the video posted on Wednesday, students will learn to divide words into "chunks" (similar to syllables) and segment each chunk to identify all the sounds in the words. Learners will use a color and shape coding system as a study tool to focus on sounds spelled with more than one letter. 📹 Students will be expected to participate in the video activity by writing the spelling words as modeled and trying different ways to study the words using colors and shapes. Instruction follows the Phono-Graphix method for teaching reading and spelling. This is a multi-sensory method developed with the dyslexic learner in mind. 👩🦳 Students will receive feedback from me throughout the week. If additional instruction is needed, I will record another video to address specific concepts. 📣 The live meeting toward the end of the week is an opportunity for students to share their work and receive additional instruction on specific words, spelling patterns, or rules they are struggling with. ✍ After the live class, students will receive their third video that presents a recorded spelling test. Students are expected to set weekly goals for themselves and report their results to the teacher. 📝 Each week a new list will be assigned. 👀 Learners will need to know the sounds of all the letters of the alphabet. ⚠ Because students will receive lists customized to their grade level, the live meetings will include students working on different lists, difficulty levels, and spelling patterns. It is important for students to come prepared with questions or work to share from their own lists and be open to listening to and learning from others. If time allows, a supplemental mini-lesson on a spelling rule or tricky spelling pattern will be taught. Those will appear on the weekly topic list below, but based on how much time we need to spend on student questions, the mini-lesson may not be included. The mini-lesson should be considered a bonus. All new students will be given the "Week 1" list for their grade level unless the parent requests a different week based on the topic list provided in this document: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:US:caa25b8b-55b5-4465-952c-3a07c321acab Mini-lesson Topic schedule: Week of April 15: 70% rule Week of April 22: i before e rule Week of April 29: special ending -tion Week of May 3: the mythical silent e Week of May 10: the "when two vowels go walking" fairy tale Week of May 17: special ending -ture Week of May 24: there, their, and they're -spelling -phonics -phonemic awareness -weekly -ongoing -multi-sensory -dyslexia

I am a state-certified Elementary Teacher who has become aware of the absence of structured spelling instruction in the schools today. In my private reading tutoring practice, I have watched my students become strong and independent spellers by using my approach. Over 2,800 students have taken my spelling classes in either a live or flex format.
